Queen of Zazzau by J. S. Emuakpor is one of those books that I did not quite know what to do with because the premise intrigued me. I thought it would take place somewhere in Africa or around that area, but my problem is that I have no clue if the world was supposed to be real or fictional. I had no evidence if the story was supposed to be historical or made up. I ended up DNFing at 31% on my Kindle because after a specific character's death I could not give a damn about the characters. The first 10% of what I read was action (like she was given a quest in the first chapter). However, it petered off rather quickly and left me wondering with what the heck I was reading and thinking oh god how am I going to make it to chapter fifty. I made it to section 13, and that is when the book lost all meaning for me, and I was going to cry if I had to read another chapter.
Things I liked about the book was the whole War God, and the main character is the reason the world is going to end in war.
Warning: Do not read if you are a prude like me or cannot handle vivid sex scenes. If you can manage that kind of thing, then you will love this book. The sex scenes were often and so vivid they had me blushing and wondering what the heck I was reading.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley is one of those books where I could see the appeal if it was the 1800's, but now there are so many things...
I'm so sorry that the sex made you uncomfortable. I'm also sorry about the death of that character--you are not alone in your feelings there. Yes. These are real historical people, events, and places. Not ALL of the people, but certainly all of the royal figures. If you ever change your mind and want to find out why Publisher's Weekly liked it so much (admittedly, their reviews are sometimes head-scratchers), feel free to contact me.
